span class="dropcap2">Affectionately called the "Geisha", inspired by Japanese Geisha's elaborate, dangling hair ornaments, Billbergia Nutans displays THE most dazzling color combinations. Billbergia Nutans is an "epiphyte", meaning it can grow, seemingly, in the air, usually seen attached to trees in the tropics. Its foliage forms an amazing funnel-like "vase" that collects rain/dew. Although easily grown in the ground, you can mimic the same natural epiphyte phenomenon in your own garden by wrapping the roots in spaghnum moss & attaching it to tree trunks, fence posts, doorways, etc., especially great for limited garden spaces!! But what is truly remarkable are "Geisha's" flowers! A four phase spectacle lasting for months! The 1st Phase is a hot pink, torpedo shaped bud that lengthens to 5", then opens for a 2nd Phase to emerge - a branched cluster of six, even more slender, pink torpedos from which emerges Phase 3 - yet another torpedo in bright, apple-green edged in electric blue that eventually curls up revealing Phase 4 - a cluster of still another six bright yellow, dangling stamens. A fascinating and easy plant to grow! Zones 9-12, or grow as a houseplant.
