Hippeastrum papilio Butterfly Amaryllis Bulb
$18.00
Hippeastrum papillio is a species amaryllis beyond compare. It's distinctive blooms are unlike other hippeastrums. Even the lovely, new cybisters are nothing like the beautifully formed "Butterfly." This particular H. papillio came to us via Len Doran's collection and has a bloom markedly different from other commercially grown Butterflies. Blooms have more green coloration than the retail bulbs, and they are self-fertile! We've used these bulbs for selfing and crossing with other amaryllis and cybisters - to great success.
We've crossed this one with a few of of our cybisters, Germa and a few commercial amaryllis and have had very pleasing results. The pollen is gold, so collection and storage of it should be done carefully.

The bulbs offered are approx. 2 1/2" in diameter. Some are shipped with offsets when available. All are shipped in 4" pots with roots and soil intact. Many of our older H. papillios are fully 6" in diameter and offsetting like mad. The tighter the pot, the more the offsets come. The key to keeping them happy is allowing pots to go completely dry between waterings. Applications of a systemic fungicide (Cleary's 3336F), Osmocote and Miracle Grow keep them healthy and get them fat very fast.
This is an heirloom plant that can become a garden showpiece if left in it's pot and allowed to offset to it's heart's content.
We do not ship Amaryllis Bulbs internationally. We do not ship plants or bulbs to Arizona.
